I’ve just finished the latest Agatha Raisin mystery by M.C. Beaton, The Witches’ Tree. Shallow characters, unbelievable dialogue as always and yet, these books are page turners for me. I finished it in two sessions.
It’s not a spoiler to say that Agatha gets involved in a murder that has little to do with her or her detective business. Or that she imagines that she and James can get back together. Or that she feels incomplete without some man, any man. She doesn’t seem to suddenly shouting at random suspects in the course of normal conversations as much as she used to. I don’t know if this is really new but Agatha’s age is actually mentioned. I don’t remember ever seeing it in print before.
When I think back over the plot it seems the author is leaving a lot of loose threads. What caused that fire? And why? Why were the poor victims dispatched that way? And what happened to that minor character to went off to visit friends, but never turned up? Surely somebody, at least her husband, should have noticed and made inquires.
Ah, the daffy world of Agatha Raisin.
